A Couple Translates Their Love Of The European Countryside Into Their Dream Home
Everyone dreams of the perfect first home. However, the reality is that not many get to fulfill it. Most would cite budgeting issues, timing, or the lack of resources. But for this couple in Singapore, they were able to get their dream home on the very first attempt — and hopefully the last.
With travel opportunities scarce these days, the couple decided to bring their love for the European countryside into their home. The eyes are immediately drawn towards the vintage folding doors featuring ornate iron grilles that act as a divider between the front door and the rest of the house.
The attention, however, must be directed towards the kitchen. After all, it is where most of the magic happened during the designing process with A Blue Cube Design (ABCD). The couple specifically wanted a small kitchen layout with every nook and cranny utilised.
The kitchen may be tiny, but it’s filled with top-tier products, including an oven, dishwasher, wine display, mini bar, and more. “Despite its small layout, we enlarged it a fair bit by breaking down the wall and joining the kitchen with the mini bar, which also serves as a pantry,” said ABCD’s designer. The kitchen backsplash has a bold design with decorative European-style tiles, which were not without its challenges.
“We spent countless hours at Hafary (a well-known store specialising in tiles) to mix and match the tile designs. This happened after we visited many tiling specialists to source for the right tiles to use in the backsplash,” he explained. “The owners’ tastes were immaculate, so the real challenge here is to find the right materials that they would also like.”
The designer also mentioned that meticulous calculations on the tiling arrangement were made to ensure that every piece fitted perfectly. “We shared our joy with the owners whenever we succeeded in tiling a curved edge on the wall. Every inch of the house is extremely artistic and well thought out.”
While intricate designs filled the kitchen, the rest of the house took on a Scandinavian-Bohemian theme with a light muted colour palette, a recessed feature wall, and soft furnishing details. They spared no expense — the porcelain wall decor took a month to arrive, and getting the perfect placement on the wall for them was another feat to take on. However, it turned out beautifully.
The resulting home is cosy, comfy, and classical. The Scandinavian-Bohemian style home was a true representation of the well-travelled couple, and they loved how it turned out. “It was a sentimental moment when they saw the final outcome of their home,” said the designer. “They never thought that their first home could be so beautiful and cosy. We’re pleased that we could make their dream home a reality.”
