How would you imagine a whiskey aficionado’s home to be? Well, you’re looking at it right now.
Like a refined bottle of single malt whiskey from the Scottish highlands, this homeowner wanted his new home to be refined. It should be the perfect place to sip on a glass of whiskey or two with his guests—a private gentleman’s club.
To start, a dark colour scheme for the abode: mysterious, exciting, and full of depth. As you enter the house, you’re immediately greeted with a feeling of luxury. Misty colours fill the space, adding allure to high-end, modern furnishings. The addition of statement lighting in the home adds character, as though you were walking into a secret lair of indulgences. To reduce the monotony of the dark colour scheme, we employed the use of feature walls with sophisticated art hung on them.
Yet, having a dark colour scheme is quite unusual for an Asian home. After all, most feng shui practices look towards having light and brightness in a home, making the place more warm and inviting. In this case, it was a calculated move to tone down the already-bright house.
This particular unit comes surrounded with wide, floor-to-ceiling windows boasting a spectacular sea view. The existing flooring is a gorgeous white marble. With all this abundance of natural light, the homeowner wanted to tone it down with a darker colour scheme. After all, whiskey should always be stored in the dark to preserve its flavour.
A darker home doesn’t necessarily equate to one that feels cold. In this project, we successfully combined two clashing interior options: complementing the dark decor scheme with ebony black fittings and luxurious mood lighting for a cosy space. When the lights dim, that’s when the full potential of the home’s interior is maximised. The different shade variations play around the room, which adds an alluring ambiance to the entire space. We know that playing around with interior lighting is capable of creating a totally different energy each time. Add to that the dark shades, and we get this intimate, relaxing vibe that is otherwise difficult to achieve with a light-coloured space.
One of the greatest challenges in designing this home also turned out to have one of the best results. Marble is a big feature in this home. However, using too much of it may lead the room to look too one-dimensional and overpower the rest of the interior design. Our challenge, in this case, was the marble selection. We were given the near-impossible task of matching four different types of natural stones in black, white, green, and brown—we had to combine them in a way that sticks to a cohesive theme and make the space look glamorous yet harmonious. Mixing the right marble pattern with a dark colour scheme can give the home a truly contemporary look that will have guests talking for all the right reasons.
At the end of the day, everyone loved the overall outcome of this dark, glamorous home. It has an aura of mystery that you could never achieve from choosing a lighter colour scheme. The homeowner loved the use of luxurious marble that made his home look naturally classy and modern. Every corner had the exact detail he wanted, making it the perfect space to entertain guests over a dram of whisky. To that, he raised his glass and toasted to the beauty of his new abode.
